What’s a non-bank lender?

Put simply, a non-bank lender  like us provides home loan options for Kiwis that don’t meet the lending criteria of the banks. Otherwise – we are not so different. We both offer people home loan options and we both make sure we are lending responsibly.

How the Reserve Bank describes non-banks

In New Zealand, the Reserve Bank uses the term ‘Non-Bank Lender’ to describe a wide group of organisations including: savings institutions, deposit-taking finance companies and non-deposit-taking finance companies. As Link Home Loans is underwritten by Pepper Money, we fit into the non-deposit-taking space, but what does that actually mean?

How Pepper fund the loans they offer

Unlike banks they don’t take deposits (money people put in their savings accounts), so where bank loans are mostly funded by those customer deposits our loans are funded by money raised through professional investors.

We’re also keeping an eye on the planet

Pepper Money always worked to support sustainable environmental initiatives – making sure they’re doing their bit for the planet. In 2021, as part of their 21st Birthday Celebrations, Pepper planted 7 hectares of protected forest in the countries they operate in; Australia, New Zealand and the Philippines. And what’s more it all started with their first trees just 80km off the Auckland coast in Aotea, the beautiful Great Barrier Island.

They have also helped contribute to a seedling nursery to help us plant trees for many years to come.
